3:10 pm “Europe picks up the baton”
Over the past year, European stock markets have outperformed their US equivalents. The balance of economic advantage has seemingly shifted in favour of Europe. A substantial decline in the value of the euro and plunging oil prices have played a part in this. But crucially, while the Federal Reserve debates the timing of tightening monetary policy, the markets have been preoccupied with the European Central Bank’s decision to move in the opposite direction, with an aggressive program of quantitative easing.
The Economists’ panel will discuss whether the economic foundations of the out-performance of European markets will be sustained. Recent volatility in the bond market has illustrated the lack of consensus about the effects of quantitative easing. Meanwhile, panel will also address the question of whether the recovery can continue to gain momentum against a background of a febrile, if familiar, political climate.
